Dr. Thomas Blackwell is a highly respected physician, educator, and healthcare leader whose career has been dedicated to advancing clinical excellence and the training of future medical professionals. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and completed his residency training at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Blackwell brings a broad and deeply informed clinical perspective to every aspect of his work. His professional interests are strongly centered on medical education, particularly the development, mentorship, and advancement of medical students and resident physicians. Dr. Blackwell currently serves as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Professor of General Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch. In these roles, he is responsible for overseeing one of the most comprehensive graduate medical education programs in the region. He provides administrative and academic leadership for more than 50 residency and fellowship programs, guiding the education and training of approximately 590 physicians in training. Alongside his extensive academic and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Blackwell also maintains an active private medical practice, allowing him to remain closely connected to patient care and the evolving needs of modern healthcare. Throughout his distinguished career at UTMB, Dr. Blackwell has held numerous leadership positions that have shaped both institutional policy and clinical education. He previously served as Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Medical Director of the Harborside Medical Group, where he played a key role in improving clinical operations and quality of care. For nearly two decades, he was the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, a position in which he mentored countless physicians and helped establish high standards of excellence, professionalism, and patient-centered care. On the national stage, Dr. Blackwell is widely recognized for his leadership in medical accreditation and physician training standards. He was selected for a prestigious six-year appointment as a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Accreditation Appeals Panel for Internal Medicine, where he contributes to ensuring fairness, rigor, and integrity in the accreditation process. He also served as Chair of the Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee, the body responsible for regulating all internal medicine residency and subspecialty training programs across the United States. In addition, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine from 2004 to 2008, helping shape national policy related to physician certification and professional standards.
