His principal current interest includes alcohol liver disease (NAFLD), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), primary biliary cirrhosis, chronic active liver disease and cirrhosis, metabolic liver diseases including alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, hemochromatosis, the carious porphyria’s, Alagille disease, drug-induced liver disease, granulomatous liver disease, Wilson’s disease, inborn errors of metabolism that affects the liver, Byler’s disease, Familial Benign Recurrent Cholestasis, Polycystic liver disease, cirrhosis associated with Cystic Fibrosis, Caroli’s disease, and other heritable liver diseases. 

Because of his interest in fatty liver disease and its various subtypes, his office is equipped with the most complete abdominal ultrasound equipment using the super Sonic (MACH 30 imaging system with Shear Wave Elastography and the MACH V4 software to quantify hepatic fibrosis, stiffness, and steatosis, characteristics required to appropriately classify individual subtypes of generic fatty liver disease. This equipment eliminates the need for liver biopsy in greater than 85% of cases. His office is 1 of the 5 facilities in the USA to have this equipment.

He has been recognized by the medical world as being a former President of the Midwest Society for Clinical Research, Association for the Study of Liver Disease in the United States, Fellowship in the European Association for the Study of Liver Disease, President of the Research Society for Alcoholism, as well more than 1334 peer-reviewed publications result in his recipient of the Marquis Award for a lifetime of excellence in medical publications. Importantly in 2022, he was recognized as the most frequently cited Author of Liver Disease Publications in the USA. 

 He is available for clinical evaluations Friday and Saturday from 2 PM to 7 PM as well as for essential urgent issues during the week beginning at 10 AM on a prescheduled basis.

Dr. Colón received his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (D.M.D.) degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, School of Dental Medicine, San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1991. A program in combination with Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. Dr. Colón’s bench research “In Vitro Organ Culture Model for Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid” – Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA, ended with excellent reviews from his Fellow colleagues and School Staff.

Dr. Colón was Staff Oral Pathologist and Forensic Odontologist for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), Washington, DC, a position he assumed in October 2004. As a Forensic Odontologist, Dr. Colón was assigned to the 436th Dover Port Mortuary Affairs, Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware. When in duty, COL Colón, member of the USA Army Reserve and as Commander of the 7202nd Medical Support Unit, Richmond, VA, was responsible for the Forensic Dental Identification of the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the USA around the military and non-military conflicts around the world.

Dr. José E. Colón was named Assistant to Director of Dental Operations within the VHA Central Office, Office of Dentistry (OoD), Washington, DC in March 2011. In his role, Dr. Colón with all his clinical and administrative knowledge of dental service delivery systems can analyze and integrate clinical data into dental operations and system redesign.
