Joyce L (Lynum) Frett’s educational journey began at Syracuse University’s College of Human Development, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Child & Family Studies. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Her academic pursuits encompassed diverse fields such as literature, psychology, and Africana studies, reflecting her broad interests and passion for holistic learning.
With a solid educational foundation, Joyce embarked on a career path centered on early childhood family education, human services, and public health. Her professional journey commenced in Syracuse, where she initially worked with pregnant and parenting adolescents. However, a pivotal move to Minneapolis, Minnesota proved to be a wise decision, as she quickly established valuable connections at various levels of the community, school district, city, county, and state.
During her four-year tenure as a director for a nonprofit child care center, Joyce’s expertise and dedication led to her recruitment by Minneapolis Special School District No. 1. In this role as a Resource Teacher, she played a pivotal role in shaping the structure, philosophy, curriculum, professional development requirements, and hiring processes of the Early Childhood Family Education program. Joyce’s responsibilities extended to supervising sites and staff citywide, as well as teaching parents and their children from pregnancy through school entry. To further enhance her teaching credentials, she pursued additional certifications at the University of Minnesota and St. Cloud State University.
Joyce eventually returned to Niagara Falls, where she continued her professional journey by engaging in substitute teaching. She later joined Health Systems Niagara, overseeing their Community Oriented Primary Care grant. Additionally, she and her husband established a nonprofit agency specializing in grant writing and workshops aimed at improving outcomes for underserved populations.
Joyce L (Lynum) Frett’s contributions to her field have not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous accolades, including a Fellowship at Syracuse University and another at The Minneapolis Foundation, funded by The National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Furthermore, she was selected as a member of the inaugural group to receive a Train the Trainer Certificate from The Culturally Relevant Anti-Bias Education Leadership Project, led by Louise Derman Sparks from Pacific Oaks College.
Despite her retirement, Joyce remains passionate about lifelong learning and innovation in early education and parenting. She continues to share her expertise through consultation and lectures on the aforementioned areas.
