Lynn Johnson, had a remarkable journey spanning over five decades, she has been honored by The Global Who’s Who

Bio from the past fifty years of community service to Murfreesboro in Hertford County and Northampton County, which are both Tier One counties that are East of 1-95 where everything Is rural and basically forgotten territory of our State of North Carolina.

Lynn Johnson was born in Conway, North Carolina on September 28, 1945 and began lively in life but had a congenital heart defect which prohibited regular activity even as a child and further in life. So, people and books became her world. Art has always been the active ingredient that stood out. From paintings and pen and ink to actual interior design became her world. She had polio at the age of nine and wore a brace on her right leg until growth spurts began to interfere. Was an Honor student and would even stay after school to design somethings for the bare classrooms.

She also loved music but when the paralysis changed her voice from that of a soprano to an alto by numbing her vocal cords she no longer sang as before. Lower years were always full of blue ribbons for artwork or an extreme high number of books read and winner of Spelling bee drills. Was also co-editor of the yearbook in the last years as well as the Beta Club Sweetheart and in the Homecoming Court.

Fast forward to College at East Carolina in Greenville, North Carolina. Not only was the entire world of people, books and also no one to say “no” to exercise. However, my childhood doctor was on campus and also was in the infirmary where I landed many times from exhaustion only to be chastised for overdoing. I was free finally to walk to classes, etc. Too much for a leaking valve. So, I learned the hard way and had my time there cut with a medical drop. Over the years to follow, classes were taken from many places, community college, etc.

Fast forward to marriage, and was told not to have children. But I did and suffered the pains from it. Congestive heart failure with the first one and sterilization from the second. It did take its toll.

But, hey the activities were still available. Was one of three tellers who started the Tarheel Bank which later became Southern Bank. Ran the Library at Chowan for Monsieur Bontemp until a full-time person could be found. Then became the Executive director/secretary for the Roberts Vaughan House for the Murfreesboro Historical Association. Salaried by three entities, the Association/ Commission, the Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Murfreesboro for which I was the secretary for the Mayor and even took FBI classes to complete work for the Town and Police Department. While there she began the Women’s Division of Chamber.

Had my own business of design called “Lynn Johnson Designs” and did residential as well as businesses in and around the area. Also, another love was and still is for plants of all kinds.

She re-vamped the closed Garden Club and it was call The New Master Gardeners. Master Gardening classes were offered in two counties which she was a member, Hertford and Halifax. As part of the projects that the Garden Club performed was that of a Farmer’s Market. There was a questionnaire to ask if a market would be supported, and yes was the answer. Then the Corporation for the Farmers Market was formed. She was the CEO and was in operation for twenty years, later did business AS THE RED BARN MARKET. The monies to build the building Came from an appropriation from the N.C. Legislature with assistance from a Senator and a member of the House. It was here that she formed a business called TWICE USED WOOD. Folks in the area donated old smoke houses, barns, sheds and even old houses to the Market for deconstruction. Unemployed people both male and female took classes at the Roanoke-Chowan Community College in the morning and actually deconstructed these gifts.

In the afternoon. Much was used on the building, and much was sold to two rather large businesses in Raleigh to further their Leeds qualification for reclaimed items. Later, she was selected as one of the founders of foR ENC which was a group working in tandem with the Kenan-Flagler School of Business to further the economic development of the counties east of I-95.

Lynn has received the Front Page Award from the news Herald located in Ahoskie, North Carolina in 2002-2003. She also was a nominee for Susan Reynolds Award for outstanding Community Service, Owned and operated a ladies retail store called Susanna’s in Murgreesboro, Owned and operated TRAVEL AGENCY called Travel Associates in Ahoskie, N.C.

She has been the chair for the Mid East Commission seated in Williamston, N.C. For counties in this region working for the Townships within. Was also head of the Murfreesboro Association for economic development of the area, and while there created a the GMMI a group so called for the Greater Murfreesboro Marketing Initiative where the first focus was for a much needed hotel.

Was selected as a representative to act on Hertford County by the Board of COMMISSIONERS to be representative to the Board of CADA, Choanoke Area Development Association, Inc. Here she served for over sixteen years as both officer and chair of the Head Start Committee. While on that board, she was awarded a place in the Hall of Fame for N.C. Community Action Group.

Lynn is extremely proud to be the ONLY female Mayor of Murfreesboro since its establishment. She also serves on the Board of Visitors at Chowan University. On the Board of The Murfreesboro Historical Commission, she is still serving as first Vice Chair. The group are all appointed by the sitting Governor and have served under four administrations. She was a part of the listed group who comprised the publication of WEST OF THE CHOWAN. This is a book about the architecture throughout the county of Hertford, many of the places are on the National Registry.

For her church, she and her husband spearheaded a project called “Loaves and Fishes” where members of the church prepare meals to be delivered to shut ins and the elderly of the church, The project after returning from a Mission Trip to Washington, D.C. where we helped do the same on a lot larger scale.

The last gift to her is a mended heart after all these years done robotically to repair the congenital defect of long ago.
